ok, as promised, i'll be blogging about the PAP. by no means am i politically affiliated to any party in spore. altho i heard workers' party candidate for east coast grc Chia Ti Lik was a former ahs-ian. wonder if that is considered an affiliation.
the past two days i came across a series of blogs that talk about politics and the state of it in singapore. and all of them were critical of the PAP. the argument was that PAP had been restricitng singapore from being a proper democracy. freedom of speech? and get sued by dear Mr LKY. freedom of expression? and get jailed and called a racist blogger. freedom? at all? not in singapore. though i believe there is at least freedom of worship here.
problem is. the media is alledgedly controlled by the PAP. how true that allegation is i am not sure. but why is it that all the time we only get coverage about how good singapore is and PAP leaders' walkabouts. i think those bloggers' problems are not against PAP per se, but rather how their policies have restricted singaporeans and created what was alledgedly a 'climate of fear' towards politics in singapore. it's not to say that PAP is a bad govt. in fact, no one can deny or miscredit them as to their contributions to singapore. will workers' party make a better govt? or will sda? PAP is a good government. however, what people want, especially younger singaporeans is more than just progress packages and promises of a better future and more jobs. no. we need a society in singapore whereby people can freely discuss politics and policies and not worry about getting sued or getting screwed by the govt. where there is a good balance in parliament where there are ample opposition members there to prevent monopoilisation of power.
while critisizing the PAP, we need to ask ourselves, what is it we really want from the men in white? stop shooting James Gomez like he's some target at target practice? let WP have a walkover in a GRC? stop using lifts to get votes?
actually the power lies in the hands of the people. if people feel that there is a need for opposition in the parliament, then vote them in lah. simple as that. if u dont want PAP to use lift upgrading to get votes, then dont make that an issue, or a factor to decide. if they keep arrowing James Gomez like nobody's business, then support him lah. singaporeans are like that. they want change but dont dare to exact it.
when the next elections come around, and when u cast ur vote, think about that old arthritis-afflicted lady, gritting her teeth and lugging bags of groceries while climbing two flights of stairs to get to her tiny hole in the wall in Potong Pasir and Hougang. all because her constituents voted to keep democracy alive in singapore.
