of course there are many sub-questions like: who will score the winning goal? will barthez cock up again? will totti fall and break a leg? will that crazy argentina referee send henry or luca toni off? who is gattuso going to ram down this time and will baldie zidane conjour some magic tonight?
then, there are the other questions: will mr chai murder us during PE tomorrow? and is there going to be physics lab and blah blah blah. BUT those are not important.
the straits times reported that an estimated 1.5 billion people are going to tune in to the world cup final. i dont believe that. i m quite sure that there will be more than 1.5billion ppl since i think they dont count those ppl who use satellite to tap in illegally to watch rtm or indon channel or those who log on to china or australian website to watch over the internet. yup. more than that. im sure the whole civilised world, with the exception of those poor taxi driver uncles who dont have tv mobile in their cabs would be watching.
so, who's going to lift the world cup? italy. not that im an italy supporter. in fact, i dont think very highly of them, ever since that match against australia, which im still sore over. and that one against germany, which i stayed up to watch, two late goals after extra time barely says anything about whether they deserve to win the world cup. all that diving and fake fouls? sorry man. but i still think that italy will win, because they have an excellent defence, which is a powerful wall, in front of another poweful wall - gianluigi buffon. not like the french, fabien barthez can only instill fear in s-league strikers and no where else. as much i hate to compliment them, the italians have a spectacular and organised defence, supported by an efficient midfield, im actually an admirer of gattuso, tho totti is so whatever. so, italy will win simply because they are the better team. younger, more energetic and if the match goes into extra time, it will definitely be them since the old french men will be exhausted.
but i support france. for a number of reasons. firstly, ive learnt the language before, so i feel a special affinity for france. funny how i dont feel the same way for china...anyway, those 1 year plus of learning french language and culture made me feel for france and so i support them. secondly, i support any team with a liverpool representation. since djibril cisse is in for at least this season, i support france. next, france have a truly world-class squad, albeit old. look at their midfield, world-class, instantly recognisable names: patrick viera, frank ribery, claude makalélé and of course, zinedine zidane. then, check out their forwards: thierry henry, the best european striker some say, david trezeguet, who's been phenomenal in serie A, louis saha, who rifled in lots of goals this season for man u. that's fantastic. their defence, under the leadership of lilian thuram, has been really good this world cup. their only problem is fabien barthez, who is so unpredicatble, but i believe he will rise up to the occasion. fourth reason: zinedine zidane. he has been inspirational and football has only written beautiful fairytales. zidane would be the best fairytale. inspiring france to victory in 1998 in Paris, dropping out in 2002 without scoring a goal and now a comeback in 2006 back on european soil, beating spain, brazil and portugal in the process. zidane would also have a personal mission to get back the trophy. if there's anything he wants in this world so badly he could die for, it's the world cup.
so, that's france for u. i THINK italy will take it, but i WANT france to win. allez les bleus!
les bleus vont être les vainqueurs! (the blues are going to be the victors!)
dont disappoint me and 60.8million other francophones. and millions more french supporters.
