they shouldnt have changed the song in the first place. an institution never changes its icons. be it a song or a logo or a motto. it's what defines the institution. for ahs to be among the best in singapore, best meaning prestigious, and not just academic-wise, we must preserve our 50 years of heritage.
the alumni are in an uproar. many of them are unhappy with the decision to change the school song. same for the students. many students i know of dont like the school song and insist on singing the old one.
isn't the old one better? yes, the words are nearly impossible to comprehend, but once you know the meaning, you would know how deep these lyrics are. that they cant just be changed. we have to preserve the chineseness of AHS. can you imagine what it would be like if the government decided to change the national anthem to english because majority of singaporeans cant speak malay? or if they were to change our flag without asking the people?
the unilateral decision to change the school song caused an uproar 3 years ago among students and teachers. even as a sec one then, i felt it was a bad decision to change the school song. 3 years later, in the present, the uproar is making a comeback, and the alumni are into it. an article was even written in lianhezaobao about the alumni's unhappiness over this issue. to save further embarrasment, please change the song back. how humiliating to be in a school where changing the song is an issue. we should be focusing on more important things...
you can change the principal, the buildings, the teachers and the students. but some things you just cannot change.
