when we thought that the haze was already starting to subside, after a fairly clear mon-fri, it returned on saturday and killed all plans of a weekend out in the good outdoors. plans for shopping and eating at hawker centres were canned (you didn't think singaporeans would be planning to go to pulau ubin or climb bukit timah on a beautiful saturday, did you?) and people stayed at home, preferring to order pizza instead...
here is an article that appeared in the straits times on thursday, oct 12:
"Be grateful forests provide oxygen: Jarkarta minister"
Singaporeans and Malaysians who complain about the haze should be fair, said Indonesia's Forestry Minister. they ought to reflect in how they have never thanked their neighbour for the oxygen produced by its forests, he said.
describing the complains as 'natural', Mr M.S. Kaban was quoted...as saying, "Our forests produce oxygen which makes air cool for them (msia and spore), but they have never been grateful. now that there is haaze, they complain. there should be a balance."
Commenting on pressure on Indonesia to ratify a regional anti-haze agreement, Mr Nazaruddin Kiemas had said that the world owed indonesia for the oxygen the country produces. A member of the parliamentary commission on the environment which is leading deliberations on ratifying the pact, he added: "but we are not calculative, as we believe in being good neighbours. And we hope for the same from others.
let us analyse the presposterity of this article. Indonesia says we OWE THEM for oxygen.
firstly, he says that oxygen makes the air cool...in all my studying of chem and bio and physics and what not, there is nowhere that says oxgen cools down the air. make the air cool...Indeed, how bad can the excuses be.
look at another major irony. "the world owed indonesia for the oxygen the country produces". firstly, the country does not produce oxygen, it's the trees, and if given a choice, they probably would not want to be planted in indonesia because they might get burned down in the end. and since indonesia acknowledges that its oxygen is important to the world, then pray, tell me, why do you want to burn down the trees that produce oxygen?
next, look at this statement: "we believe in being good neighbours. And we hope for the same from others." i guess that if indonesia really wants to be a good neighbour, it could start by enforcing their laws against open burning of trees to clear land. well, at least they got what the hoped for, which is the same treatment from their neighbours. you get what you give. give haze, get complains...
hopefully the haze clears asap so we can get on with our proper lives.
