so how small is a mustard seed? really tiny. how big is a mountain? really big. how great is my God? infinitely massive.
it's been a week since i've booked in. having to do guard duty on a sunday is not. fun. at. all. it was really, really horrible staying in camp on a sunday. not to do anything fun, exciting or out of the ordinary, but to do the very mundane, boring and time-wasting guard duty. the past week has been an okay one for me. had my very first status. 5 days RMJ. which was quite good except that we still had to do section training. the matador is so not a nice thing to carry. if i ever get an injured back, i will blame the army. but 5 days RMJ, and i had to go for an xray at CMPB today, which was the last day of my status. CMPB is like, so awesome. the xray printer is spoilt, so i can't get my xray today. typical SAF.
anyway, it seems like i've become very introspective recently, an observation by a certain friend of mine, ms yap. haha. i really miss secondary school and throwing staple bullets at sok shin, which would get stuck in her very thick mane of hair, and she would walk unknowingly to the toilet with half the level looking at the curious metal pieces falling out from her hair. (that is another story for another day). i like to think that i've always been introspective. perhaps BMT helped cultivate a habit of reflection to a whole new level, what with the writing of the daily reflections in that little black book. i think it's important for one to reflect how the day went by, how one reacted to what scenarios, what one said in response to what situation and what one can do to improve or remedy any mistakes. it's something that is lacking i feel in many people, but then again, what do i know?
the mid-week announcement about the tweaks to the political system have really caught my attention. it's been ages since we've had something as drastic as this happen, and it's sort of caught me by surprise. i think it takes a very self-assured government to actually come up with something like this. then again, the PAP doesnt need to worry about the opposition really putting up any kind of challenge to their leadership, given the sorry state of the opposition at the present moment. nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how an expanded opposition presence will change the dynamics of Parliament. i think what people want from the opposition is more than merely providing 'checks and balances', but rather to provide an alternative, a different option, perspective or paradigm, and the singapore opposition has failed in that respect, and to that end i have to disagree with Low Thia Khiang that only a strong opposition presence can provide an effective system of checks and balances, but i would propose that a quality opposition, even one with nine members in the House, can provide an effective counterweight. rather, the most effective check and balance, is a free and fair electoral system where there is no stigma in voting out an ineffective and corrupt government. something that singapore has yet to, and hopefully will not need to experience.
that was my two cents' worth of what's happening recently. can't wait to ORD...
